Overview
Startup County VR is an educational virtual reality game that borrows the strategic mechanics of Monopoly and Risk and applies them to entrepreneurship. Players build businesses, negotiate deals, acquire resources, and compete against each other in a virtual economy that teaches real business skills through play.
The game transforms abstract business concepts (market positioning, resource allocation, competitive strategy, financial planning) into tangible, interactive experiences. Players do not read about entrepreneurship; they practise it in a world where their decisions have visible consequences.
The Challenge
The design challenge was translating real business strategy into game mechanics that feel fun and intuitive without sacrificing educational value. Monopoly and Risk work because they are simple to learn and hard to master. Startup County VR needed the same elegance: approachable entry, deep strategy, and genuine learning outcomes, all within a VR environment that players want to return to.
The Approach
I designed the game around three core loops: build (acquire resources and establish businesses), grow (expand operations and hire teams), and compete (negotiate, form alliances, and outmaneuver opponents). Each loop maps to real entrepreneurial skills.
The VR environment makes the experience visceral: players walk through their virtual offices, see their teams at work, and witness the physical scale of their business decisions. This spatial awareness is something no textbook or video can replicate.
The multiplayer layer allows collaborative and competitive play: teams of entrepreneurs can cooperate or compete, simulating real market dynamics where partnerships and rivalries shape outcomes.
