Overview

Chem Lab VR is an educational virtual reality application that replicates a chemistry laboratory environment where students can conduct experiments safely, repeat procedures without material costs, and learn laboratory techniques at their own pace. The application simulates chemical reactions, equipment handling, and safety protocols with procedural accuracy.

The lab environment includes realistic equipment (beakers, flasks, Bunsen burners, pipettes, and safety showers), all interactable through VR controllers. Chemical reactions render visually with accurate color changes, gas production, and precipitation effects.

The Challenge

Chemistry simulations must be procedurally accurate: students learn muscle memory and decision sequences that transfer to real labs. Incorrect simulation teaches incorrect habits. The challenge was balancing educational accuracy with VR interaction fidelity while making the experience accessible to students with no VR experience.

The Approach

I designed the lab environment from real chemistry lab layouts: equipment positioned according to standard safety protocols, chemical storage following hazard classification, and procedural workflows matching actual laboratory practice.

Each experiment follows a structured workflow: preparation, execution, observation, and cleanup. The system tracks student decisions at each step, providing feedback on technique, safety compliance, and procedural accuracy.

Safety training is integrated into the experience: students must demonstrate proper equipment handling and safety protocols before accessing more advanced experiments. This creates a progression system that mirrors real lab training.
